My Story

8 Sep 2025

This September, I'm taking on the Great Cycle Challenge - to fight childhood cancer. I will move with a purpose and pledge to ride 500 miles to raise $2,500 to fund research for childhood cancers.

Did you know, cancer is the number one cause of death by disease for kids in the U. S. In 2024, approximately 15,000 children ages 0-19 were diagnosed with cancer, sadly 1,600 children died. 84% of children diagnosed with cancer will survive the next five years. That's not long enough! We need to give kids a lifetime. 95% of those who survive develop some major health condition; congestive heart failure, cognitive impairment, a second cancer (female breast cancer, thyroid) by age 45.

Childhood cancer research is severely underfunded! Less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute annual budget is dedicated to childhood cancers.

While more than 200 cancer drugs have been developed and approved for adults, the FDA, through 2021 has approved a total of 35 drugs for use in the treatment of childhood cancers. 29 of the drugs were originally approved only for adult use. Most of the "current standard" drug treatments approved to treat childhood cancer were approved in the 1980s. As of 2020, only six new drugs have been developed for pediatric cancer.

Kids should be living their life, not fighting for it. I believe supporting this challenge will bring us closer to a day where all children are given equal opportunities to thrive.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support the Children's Cancer Research Fund, to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for all childhood cancers.

Your support will change lives!

Thank you.

“Thank you for your generous donation. Did you know, diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) represents approximately 80% of the malignant brainstem tumors occurring in children. The outcome of children with DIPG continues to remain dismal, with an average survival of only 11 months and a 2-year overall survival rate of less than 10%.”
